Andy Robertson while speaking to Pitchside (h/t Liverpool Echo) was asked who the worst-dressed player in the Liverpool dressing room, prompting him to pick fellow defender Nathaniel Phillips.
There appeared to be zero hesitation in Robertson’s mind when the question was raised and the name of Phillips was instantly taken with the defender naming former Liverpool player Divock Origi as the predecessor to the throne.
Phillips was on the verge of leaving Liverpool in the summer due to lack of game time however the club decided to hold on to him with regard to the fact that a lot of personnel was injured.
The Bolton-born defender has been an able squad player and performed well whenever called upon. His best season with the club was the 2020/21 season where due to injuries to first-team players, he was part of way more games than expected.
However, as has been realised over time, he performed his role exceptionally well and in the end, his performances did play a part in achieving a top-four finish in spite of it being a season rippled with injuries to many key players.
With our current crop of defenders, it is very less likely that Phillips could go on to become a mainstay in the first team with the defender behind the pecking order of Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomes.
Even players from the academy such as Sepp van den Berg are competing for a spot in the first team and it would take a tremendous effort and luck for Phillips to change the current scenario.
It would be the best option for both the player and the club to find an amicable solution next summer which would be beneficial for all parties involved.
