“Can’t fathom”- Carragher rips into Liverpool ace following Brentford humbling

Jamie Carragher slams Liverpool star Alisson Becker for his performance against Brentford

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has slammed Brazilian international and goalkeeper Alisson Becker for his performance against Brentford which the Reds lost 3-1.

The Bees were the dominant side throughout the game and were 2-0 up at the end of the first half. They even had two goals disallowed which saved us from further embarrassment.

Second-half was slightly better and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain got us back in the game after he was there in the box to meet Trent Alexander-Arnold’s left-footed cross into the box.

However, the west London side would score their third in the 84th minute and finish the game for us to even think of making a comeback. Now, while speaking to Sky Sports (h/t Metro), Carragher slammed Alisson for continuing to play from the back.

“I can’t fathom why players at this level – and we are talking about some of the best players in Europe over the last three years – would do this. When you’re in a situation where the stadium’s up for it, the crowd and the energy are up, you’ve just nearly conceded a goal, why would Alisson then play a goal kick out to someone’s feet.”

While the Brazilian shot-stopper did have a poor game, he cannot be entirely blamed for the loss. Jurgen Klopp’s men have been playing and building from the back for some time now and this time things did not work out as they have done previously.

Up front, we lacked the killer touch with both Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah firing blanks and missing chances that should have been converted. The midfield was a disaster, and it is not surprising to see the fans demand new faces in the middle of the park.

The defence too did not do much. Ibrahima Konate put the ball into the back of his own net to give the home side the lead, and neither the centre-back nor the keeper could have done much to stop it from crossing the line.

It is understandable why Carragher would be pissed. But it will not be wise to slam the keeper for a poor performance, who otherwise has pulled off some stunning saves this season and helped us win some crucial points so far.

Klopp will hope to put this loss behind him and prepare for the next game. The Reds will host Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday (January 7) for the FA Cup third-round fixture and Alisson will hope to keep a clean sheet against a tricky side.
