“I just don’t see it”- Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson rules out Reds from top-four race

Former Red Mark Lawrenson not confident of Liverpool finishing in the top-four

As the heading makes it extremely clear to understand, former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson is not confident that the Reds will make it to a top-four spot this season and carry the risk of not featuring in next season’s UEFA Champions League.

A string of inconsistent performances have led to several pundits and former players having such opinions about the team. They cannot even stand blamed as it is right in front of us and there are obviously loads of areas the team could focus on to improve their standings.

Currently, in the ninth position, the Reds find themselves 10 points behind Manchester United who are in fourth. Liverpool need to certainly perform some magic of sorts in the second half of the season to ensure UCL football next season.

Speaking on the Weekend Sports Breakfast, here is what Lawro had to say about the Reds’ chances (h/t Liverpool Echo):

“I just don’t see it. It’s sheer inconsistency. Virgil van Dijk is still out as well, It was said two months ago that if you get at Liverpool, you will create chances.”

“They’re going through that change a little bit. They haven’t become a bad side and the manager is not a bad manager – he’s outstanding.”

“He’s said it already, it’s one of those where they get to the summer and the revolving door will open: there will be people coming out and people coming in.”

Transitional Phase for the Reds

It is certainly a transitional phase at the Reds and we need to get a few big-name signings in the immediate future to help the club through this phase. Moreover, the current lot of players are also not performing at their best, which is all the more hurting the Reds in all ways possible.

The tired legs of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson are certainly not sustainable and the Reds need to bring in some competition for their respective places in the starting XI. At 32, Hendo also has only so much top-flight football left in him and expecting him to deliver week in and week out is nothing short of madness.

Fabinho and Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson have been extremely inconsistent this year.

For that matter, most midfielders at the club are over 31, and among those who are not, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita seem set to leave the club at the end of their contracts in June this year. That makes it all the more important to get in new midfielders to help the Reds get to a UEFA Champions League spot.

More Liverpool News:

As Lawro said, the revolving door will be active in the summer, and the Reds need more incomings than outgoings to balance the books for the betterment of the club in its long-term as well. However, the immediate focus should be on getting a top-four finish to secure UCL football.
