Jamie Carragher urges Jurgen Klopp to ‘move on’ from Liverpool star Joel Matip

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has called on manager Jurgen Klopp to make tough decisions in order to pave the way for a summer rebuild, including parting ways with long-term player Joel Matip.

Carragher’s bold suggestion comes as the Reds look to revitalize their squad and bounce back from a challenging season. (h/t The Mirror) Carra believes that a shake-up is necessary to breathe new life into the team.

Joel Matip, who has been at the club since 2016, is the latest player Carragher has identified as a potential departure to free up space for fresh talent. The Cameroonian has had his fair share of injury troubles and now plays second fiddle to Ibrahima Konate for a place in the starting XI alongside first-choice centre-back Virgil van Dijk.

Here is what Carragher told Redmen Plus via The Mirror about the 31-year-old Cameroonian:

“I look at the defence and I think Joel Matip now has got a year to go. If you got £10million, whatever the price may be, it’s probably right to move on. I do think we need a left-sided defender, a left-footed centre-back. A lot of teams have them, we don’t.”

Does Matip need to go?

The former defender-turned-pundit acknowledges Matip’s contributions over the years, but with Liverpool aiming to re-establish themselves as title contenders, Carragher believes it’s time for a change.

Carragher’s comments highlight the importance of constantly evolving and refreshing the squad to maintain competitiveness. As Liverpool experienced a challenging season, finishing outside the top four, it is evident that reinforcements are needed to bolster the team and reclaim their winning mentality.

While Klopp has nurtured a strong bond with his players, including Matip, he has not certainly demonstrated a willingness to make difficult decisions in terms of picking players. The manager’s inability to strike the right balance between loyalty and results while picking the XI at times has cost the Reds more than just once.

There are a number of left-footed centre-backs in the Premier League including the likes of Benoit Badiashile of Chelsea, Max Kilman of Wolves and obviously, Nathan Ake at Manchester City and even the Reds could benefit from having one in their team.

As the summer transfer window approaches, Klopp and his team should assess the squad and make strategic moves to reinforce key areas. While Carragher’s suggestion may be met with differing opinions, it serves as a reminder that the pursuit of success often requires tough choices and a willingness to embrace change.
