Danny Murphy says Levi Colwill shouldn’t join Liverpool

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has voiced his concerns over Liverpool’s reported interest in Chelsea’s Levi Colwill. Murphy believes that a move to Liverpool at this stage of his career could hinder Colwill’s development due to a potential lack of game-time.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Murphy talked about how a lack of game time could be a real issue for Colwill in case he makes the switch to Merseyside. Here is what he had to say:

“Although I would love to see him at Liverpool, because I am a Liverpool fan and he is real quality, why would he go there? He’s not going to play. If I was him, I would ask for a loan. Go to Brighton again for another year.”

“I don’t think he would (play regularly at Liverpool) although potentially he is very, very good. He’s not going to play ahead of Virgil (van Dijk) or (Ibrahima) Konate.”

While it is maybe true that he won’t play over the likes of Virgil and Ibou, there is a way to accommodate all three in the same lineup. Liverpool’s style of play, which emphasizes attacking football and high-intensity pressing, could provide the perfect platform for Colwill to thrive.

The Reds’ evolving tactics that involve switching to a back three at times and emphasis on utilizing young talents make it an enticing prospect for the 20-year-old defender. Moreover, he could provide tactical flexibility with his ability to play as a left-back as well.

Colwill to the Reds?

Colwill showcased his potential during his loan spell at Brighton last season, impressing with his composure, defensive abilities, and distribution from the back. His performances meant that he caught the eye of Liverpool, who could surely do with some refurbishment in that department.

While Murphy raises valid concerns about game-time, it’s crucial to remember that Liverpool operates with a congested fixture schedule, injuries, and the need to rest key players, Colwill could find himself with ample chances to make an impact. Moreover, no other club would know the importance of having a solid number of defenders over Liverpool.

Furthermore, the experience of training alongside top-class defenders such as Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip would undoubtedly benefit Colwill’s development.

Working with Jurgen Klopp and his coaching staff could unlock his full potential and accelerate his growth as a player.

While concerns about game-time are valid, Liverpool’s track record of nurturing young talents and providing opportunities for growth should not be overlooked. If Colwill is indeed signed by Liverpool, it would be a calculated move that aligns with the club’s philosophy and future ambitions.
