Liverpool midfielder Thiago to Barcelona ‘a concrete possibility’

Following the news of Liverpool duo Jordan Henderson and Fabinho seeing themselves linked with moves to Saudi clubs, it seems that another one of the Reds’ midfielders could be on his way out of Merseyside, and that is Thiago.

And following up on that, RMC Sport’s Sacha Tavolieri put out a tweet recently talking about the possibility of Thiago moving back to Catalonia to play for Barcelona under his mentor, Xavi. It is no secret that Thiago broke out as a technically world-class midfielder at Barcelona under Pep Guardiola and followed him to Bayern Munich as well, from where he eventually landed up on Merseyside.

“Sources inside #LiverpoolFC feels #Thiago Alcantara leaving to #FCBarcelona this summer has a concrete possibility. Nothing has been done yet but I understand it’s the main option for the Spanish who would be « more than » keen to come back at Barça & playing under Xavi, his mentor. Things will move… #Barça #LFC”

The 32-year-old Spanish international joined Liverpool in 2020 after our Premier League triumph, and since then, his displays at Liverpool have been world-class whenever he’s been on the pitch. However, the player has also missed out on a lot of action due to his proneness to injury and that makes us wonder about his long-term future with Liverpool.

While it is of course real that the fanbase rallied out for a midfield overhaul at the club, it being so sudden, and eradicative in nature to a certain extent is something that has taken most off-guard. The much-needed overhaul was supposed to be a transitional shift instead of just shipping out the existing midfielders and getting on board new players.

Complete midfield overhaul at the Reds?

Liverpool, over the summer, lost three midfielders in James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita. Two of our starters in Fabinho and Hendo also see themselves linked with moves elsewhere.

That leaves us with three kids and two new faces in midfield which surely is not ideal by any means. There has to be some sort of a link between our new-look midfield and the team we have had in the last couple of seasons. Thiago, regardless of anything else, is a world-class midfielder on his day.

By all means, all of the midfield options that include Stefan Bajcetic, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott and new boys Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai are incredible talents who could take the Reds where we want to be. However, the presence of a few senior midfielders would never do any harm.

It is important that we keep a world-class player like Thiago at the club irrespective of anything else. He is pretty much world-class every week and there’s loads he could teach up-and-coming youngsters in the club. However, there is a price for everything.
