Virgil van Dijk undertakes interesting approach to inspire resurgent Liverpool teammate.

Virgil van Dijk highlights his desire to perform as the best captain and player for Liverpool amid ongoing contract uncertainty. The 33-year-old’s contract expires after the current season with a few months left as the Premier League race heats up.

Liverpool are currently at the top of the Premier League table with Arsenal right behind them in the intense race. The Reds have suffered four Premier League draws in eight games since the start of 2025, hindering their consistent start.

Van Dijk has played a pivotal role as the leader and a constant presence in Liverpool’s defence under Arne Slot. The Reds started the season strongly in all phases but their defence have struggled to keep the clean sheets recently.

However, Van Dijk has remained a constantly reliable presence in the defence, saving the Reds and his struggling teammates. Van Dijk struggled with recovering his former form after suffering an ACL injury during the 2020-21 season against Everton from a horrendous Jordan Pickford challenge.

The Dutch captain struggled to regain his former form until the last season when Jurgen Klopp picked him as captain. Van Dijk succeeded outgoing Jordan Henderson and used the captaincy role to propel himself back as one of the best defenders in the world, if not the very best of this generation.

Speaking to Sky Sports (via YouTube), Van Dijk responded to his contract situation by asserting his dedication towards Liverpool. He said:

“I’m in a very good place physically, and mentally, and the only focus I have at the moment is trying to be successful with Liverpool. I want to be the best captain and player I can be for the team and for the club.”
