Liverpool’s bad luck continued in the FA Cup as well. The Reds slumped to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Chelsea right after losing 3-0 to Watford earlier in the Premier League.
Following a record 44-game unbeaten streak, Liverpool have now lost two games consecutively. Although we are still comfortably ahead of second-placed Manchester City in the league table, crashing out of the FA Cup in this manner does taste sour.
Our lack of squad depth was highlighted once again. Over the course of this term, we have seen Jurgen Klopp almost pick and choose his battles. We have broken our record for fielding the youngest team twice this season. While it is a great way to hand opportunities to the youth stars, Liverpool must not be in a position where we are forced to nearly throw away matches.
Speaking to BBC (h/t LFC.com) after the game, Adam Lallana expressed his disappointment.
“There were big moments in the first half where we failed to score,” he said.
While admitting that the game might have been a delight for neutral fans, he claimed that Liverpool started the second half well but lost momentum as time wore on.
“A couple of mistakes and if you let a good team like Chelsea counter on you like that, they’re going to have chances. We’re bitterly disappointed with the result. Credit to Chelsea,” he concluded.
Although we are the champions-elect as far as the Premier League is concerned, we also have the Champions League title to defend. And that certainly won’t be a cakewalk by any measure.
Lately, things haven’t been going in our favour but we have a strong team with a manager like Klopp at the helm. We have pulled through in the past and there is no reason why we cannot do it again this time.
