Until about a couple of seasons ago, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side were still largely considered a work in progress. Players were being brought in at a gradual pace and the manager’s identity was slowly being embedded onto the squad.
While the acquisitions of names like Mohamed Salah, Alisson Becker and Virgil Van Dijk have shadowed the relatively smaller ones, one player whose services the Reds couldn’t have done without is that of Dutch international midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum
.Despite not becoming an immediate feature in the side, Wijnaldum’s importance to this Liverpool side’s structure and system simply cannot be underplayed. Best described as a box-to-box midfielder who is equally effective at either end of the pitch, the former Newcastle United man has now become a vital part of Klopp’s plans.
Now into the final year of his current tenure with the club, there has been talk of the Dutchman potentially forcing a move away from Anfield amid strong interest from Barcelona.
Reports in Dutch media outlets (via This is Anfield h/t Liverpool Echo ) have claimed that the midfielder has had a change of heart regarding wanting a move away, and that he’s currently awaiting a fresh contract offer from Liverpool.
It has further been claimed that no talks have been held between the parties so far, with the 29-year-old’s four-year contract demand seemingly acting as the stumbling block. Wijnaldum is reportedly
waiting to hear from the club about a potential contract offer. One thing that can be said with utmost certainty is that Wijnaldum’s presence will be missed if he departs. As things stand, going into the new season without the Dutchman’s presence, or without the purchase of a replacement, could end up being completely suicidal.
