According to the Mirror, Glen Johnson has urged Liverpool to sign the duo of Marco Verratti and Lorenzo Insigne. The former Liverpool defender feels that the Euro winning Italian duo would fit in well at the club and help them lift trophies.
Italy put together some show in the Euros this season as they went all the way to lifting the trophy after defeating England in the finals. What was commendable is the team spirit and how someone from the side stepped up in each game to take them towards victory. Among the individual stars that shone were Marco Verratti and Lorenzo Insigne.
Insigne terrorized defenders with the classic ‘cut in from the wide areas to shoot’ tactic as he was one of Italy’s chief threats in the final third. His goal against Belgium where he danced around the opposition to score is replay-worthy. In midfield, Marco Verratti was a calm and composed presence who controlled the tempo of the game. A star for PSG as well, Verratti showcased it on the big stage.
With Liverpool being relatively quiet in recruiting forwards and midfielders, former defender Glen Johnson was of the opinion that the club should go after the EURO winning duo.
“I really like Lorenzo Insigne. He’s been brilliant for years, but he performed very well during the Euros. I just enjoy the way he plays and I think he would suit Liverpool too. I like Marco Verratti as well. They’re two huge names so it’s not rocket science choosing them as ideal signings for Liverpool. During the Euros you could see both of their desire to win and that’s what’s needed if you’re going to win league titles. You need those sorts of characters.”
The Italian pair would no doubt be fantastic additions to the side but they might be difficult to poach from their respective sides, especially after their Euro campaign. The Reds haven’t really shown any interest in Verratti and Insigne so far and it’s hard to say if they do so in the future.
