Barcelona deny Coutinho clause that will net Liverpool £20m

According to Mundo Deportivo (h/t Mirror), Barcelona have denied that a clause exists for Philippe Coutinho that would see them pay £20m to Liverpool. It was understood that a clause related to the Brazilian making 100 appearances at Barcelona would see Liverpool pocket that additional fee but the Catalan club have denied the same.

Once a darling at Liverpool, Coutinho has had a mighty fall from grace after a big-money move to Barcelona. The Brazilian was one of the finest playmakers in Europe during his spell at Anfield under the tutelage of Brendan Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp. It seemed like he had it all with his dribbling, passing and shooting.

Yet, when Barcelona called in 2018, Coutinho forced through a move. It has not gone in any way that he would have hoped as he struggled to replicate even a smidge of his Liverpool form. However, he did end up winning a treble at Bayern when he was sent on loan in 2019/20. Despite returning to the club, Coutinho failed to kick on.

Amidst Barcelona’s tumultuous financial struggles, they have denied that they will owe Liverpool an additional sum for Coutinho. The Catalan club are refuting that a clause exists in Coutinho’s deal that will guarantee Liverpool £20m if the player makes 100 appearances for the club. That threshold is likely to be reached over the current season.

It’s not very clear whether any such clause does exist. Spanish outlets have denied that it does. Nonetheless, in the event that it is there, Liverpool could get a cool cash boost this season which will no doubt be of help to the finances. It would seem the Coutinho sale worked out in favour of Liverpool instead of Barca.
