Report: 20-year-old Liverpool academy product set for Anfield stay after exit links

Transfer News: Neco Williams set to stay put at Liverpool

The Athletic have reported the latest on Neco Williams‘ situation at Liverpool. The report mentions that the 20-year-old is set to stay at the Merseyside club in spite of speculations. The player has impressed the coaching staff during the preseason.

There seems to be a complete U-turn in Neco Williams’ decision. A report from The Athletic back in June stated that Williams will push for an exit.

It suggested that while he has developed at the club, the player craves more game time. Clubs like Leeds, Southampton, Aston Villa and Burnley have shown interest in him. Liverpool had even lined up 18-year-old Conor Bradley to replace Williams.

Neco Williams could develop into an excellent player

The latest update, however, suggests that the Welsh international is satisfied being the backup to Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Should Williams stay put at Liverpool?

Neco Williams is a product of Liverpool’s academy. The player made his first-team debut in an EFL cup game against Arsenal in October 2019. He made his Premier League debut in June 2020 as a second-half substitute versus Crystal Palace.

As one would assume he has not featured much. Williams is competing with one of the best right-backs currently in the game. On top of that, Alexander-Arnold is still 22-years-old. Williams might not want to wait until Trent’s best years are behind him. However, he is still 20. The player could afford to lose some minutes to develop under Jurgen Klopp.

Neco Williams has not been a regular for Liverpool

The right-back has shown good early signs. However, he still has a long way to go. Staying and training with a top manager like Klopp and a top player like Trent can only boost his development.
