According to The Athletic (Subscription Required), Liverpool are in negotiations with Mohamed Salah over a new contract that will make him the highest-paid player in the club’s history.
The Egyptian sensation is in the final two years of his Reds contract. He signed for Liverpool four years ago in a move that commanded £43.9million in transfer fees.
In that time, Salah has established himself as the clear goal-scoring threat for the club, scoring an astounding 126
goals in 204 games for the club, and also raking in 49 assists during that stint. These numbers for a Premier League player isn’t something ordinary. The mercurial winger, now 29, was on song again as Liverpool thrashed Norwich City 3-0 on the opening day of the new season.
And the report states that Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), accept that the former Chelsea winger is one of the ‘finest players’ in the world and should be ‘paid accordingly’.
However, it is believed that they would not cross a certain limit that destroys the club’s wage structure. This is a potentially controversial statement that can divide opinions within the fanbase.
Some would feel that Salah deserves to be paid what he asks for, while others, perhaps a majority, would understand that club’s wage structure could be at risk if the Reds offer too much to the Egypt international.
For now, the club’s intentions to offer a new contract to him – one which can make him the highest-paid player in the club’s history – is positive news. With the Reds already tying a bunch of first-string stars to new contracts this month, Salah’s name on that list would be icing on top of the cake.
