Transfer News: Liverpool make big offer for Real Madrid winger Rodrygo

According to transfer news on El Nacional (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool have made a big bid to ‘unsettle’ Real Madrid winger Rodrygo, who is on the lookout for more minutes.

An informal bid of around €60million has been made to ‘test the waters’ and Real Madrid’s resolve when it comes to holding onto their prized young asset. Just 21, he still has a long way to go in his career.

Nevertheless, he enjoyed just 17 starts in La Liga last season and four in the UEFA Champions League- a tournament they won last month by beating Liverpool in Paris. Rodrygo did not start that game.

Sadio Mane has sealed a move to Bayern Munich, which isn’t a secret anymore. The Senegalese winger was a regular starter for Jurgen Klopp, and his impeccable fitness record meant the Reds never really bothered about the left flank ever since Mane started playing there.

Do LFC need Rodrygo?

But with the former Southampton player now at the Allianz Arena, the Reds face a situation where they could have to bring in a long-term replacement for either him or Mohamed Salah.

The Egyptian’s contract expires in 2023 and it remains to be seen if the Reds hand a player into his 30s a new long-term deal. In such a scenario, young wingers hardly come any better than Rodrygo.

Signed from Santos at a young age, he has made himself an important player in Carlo Ancelotti’s team. He may want more playing time right now but would also understand that with age and experience, he could become a regular fixture in Los Blancos‘ XI.

It is also up for debate if the Reds- were they to sign Rodrygo- could hand him more playing time than he gets with Los Galacticos. Salah, after all, is set to stay here for another season and Luis Diaz is mesmerising down the left-hand side.

Darwin Nunez, meanwhile, is expected to lead our line for years to come while Diogo Jota isn’t alien to playing out wide as well.

Only time will tell if news of LFC’s interest in Rodrygo has any substance to it- but this would be a huge long-term signing if we managed to complete such a deal.
