“Make the difference”- Lijnders sheds light on Liverpool’s transfer approach this summer

After overseeing what has been an extremely tedious transfer window, Liverpool assistant coach Pepijn Lijnders sang praises of the club’s recruitment team and new Sporting Director, Julian Ward.

Ward, this summer, was responsible for the arrivals of Darwin Nunez, Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsey. He was also a vital cog in seeing through the contract extensions of Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota and Joe Gomez.

Lijnders, speaking ahead of the launch of his book, said the club “signs players for the first 11”. He drew attention to signing players “who can make a difference in the big games”.

“That is why we are so happy with our scouting department and our sporting director. We really tried to sign the players who can make the difference.”

As quoted by Liverpool Echo, speaking about forward mainstay Sadio Mane’s departure this season to Bayern Munich, Lijnders believes the club needs to look to the future and not the past. He believes the new look attack has it in its tank to succeed.

This season poses to be a speck of transformation because the club has moved on from a lot of players this summer. The task at hand is to blend in the big-name signings to the first team as quickly as possible.

The new campaign will see Luis Diaz play his first full season at the club, and Darwin Nunez leading the front three as well.
