Having Kylian Mbappe in a Liverpool shirt is not something any fan would not want. The 24-year-old’s records speak for themselves. The Frenchman is one of the hottest youngsters in the football world right now, and could potentially take the mantle currently held by Lionel Messi.
Back before he signed his contract extension with Paris Saint-Germain, there was a lot of speculation over Mbappe’s future. Real Madrid and Liverpool were heavy frontrunners to get the player on board.
But a move didn’t go through and the player signed a whopping £546m
deal with the Ligue 1 giants over a period of two years with the option of a third. These kinds of figures are not something Liverpool could pay, at least under FSG.However, The Athletic‘s recent piece talks about how the former Monaco striker ‘rejected’ a move to Liverpool. Even though it may sound obvious in hindsight, it doesn’t obviously end there. Mbappe was more or less willing to move to Real, but the fact that his PSG contract offered him so much more than just money could have been a deciding factor for him not to switch clubs.
However, problems between PSG and Real Madrid in negotiations meant that the French club did not want to sell him to Los Blancos leaving Liverpool as the only viable option. Money obviously talks, and hence, that alongside other factors ensured that the Frenchman stays in his country.
Even though Mbappe not moving to Liverpool did not significantly impact the Reds by any means, having him on the team would have undoubtedly been a major boost to the club, as he is one of the most talented and promising young players in the world. With his speed, skill, and scoring ability, he would have added a new dimension to Liverpool’s attack and helped to make them even more formidable on the field.
Since his ‘rejecting’ a move to the Reds, Liverpool went on to sign Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo in the attack. Although making a comparison is really not smart, the duo certainly has a lot of potential and could make their own name in the footballing world. Hopefully, they edge close to Mbappe in terms of the impact created on the team.
Ultimately, while the club has done well without him, the addition of Mbappe could have been the best thing to happen to Liverpool since the appointment of Jurgen Klopp.
