Real Madrid star forward Rodrygo reveals he almost joined Liverpool at the age of 16 for just €3 Million

A dynamic Brazil attacker could have joined Jurgen Klopp’s first project in its early stages in 2017 for around £3 million. Rodrygo had brief links with an £86 million move to Liverpool next summer, following the potential arrival of Kylian Mbappe at Real Madrid.

The Brazilian international Arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu in 2019, although he could have arrived at Anfield earlier in his career after attracting interest from Europe when he was 16 years old.

Rodrygo instead earned 68 appearances for his hometown Santos as a youth, eventually wearing the No. 11 shirt and following in Neymar’s footsteps. Fast forward to the current season; the star has 15 goals and 8 assists in 42 appearances for Madrid.

The ex-Santos man admitted in an interview with the Guardian (h/t Fabrizio Romano) how close he got to joining Liverpool and he instead opted to remain in his homeland. The Anfield-based outfit lost out but it was very much Los Blancos’ gain. He said:

“We didn’t close the deal because I didn’t want to, I wanted to stay at Santos even though the offer was very good. The pathway they promised me would also have been very good for my career. I was going to finish my studies in England to prepare for European football.”

“It had always been my dream to play in Europe. Everything was very good, but my desire spoke louder. I wanted to stay at Santos and make a bit of history at the club. And that’s what happened: I was able to fulfil my dream of playing for Santos. But it’s true, I almost went to Liverpool.”

Rodrygo is making history and playing remarkably well with a record-breaking season. At such a young age, achieving so much is quite frightening for rival clubs. It was his dream to play for Madrid and now he is leading his dream club to greater heights.

Real Madrid’s Wonder-kid

Life after Salah

Liverpool is getting ready for life after Salah. Mo is getting some tempting offers from the Saudi club Al Ittihad. Liverpool do realize that they would not be able to hold the Egyptian star as they do not have as many financial resources as Saudi clubs.

The versatile attacker, who is playing remarkably for Real Madrid this season, could be seen as a potential replacement for Mo Salah at Anfield eventually. The arrival of Mbappe at Real Madrid has made Rodrygo’s spot in the team difficult.

More Liverpool news

Links have been made between Rodrygo and Liverpool a few times, although the Brazilian has a contract until 2028 with Madrid. A mainstay on the Brazil national team, Rodyrgo certainly has the profile to replace Salah, and at 23, he has plenty of years of development left.
