Despite the football season entering February, we are nowhere close to getting the conclusion of contract sagas of any of Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
If one former Red is to be believed, however, things may have progressed much further than we are aware of on the outside.
Robbie Fowler makes interesting claim amid Virgil van Dijk, Mo Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold contract standoff
Speaking recently with Ben Foster on Amazon Prime Video Sport’s “Ben Foster Meets…”, former Liverpool forward and club legend Robbie Fowler made an intriguing speculated guess regarding the contract situations of Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold.
“I do have a little theory actually and I don’t know if this is so far from the truth.
“I just think two of them have signed already, you know, for some reason, and maybe one hasn’t. But a simple fact is the club can’t come out and say ‘yous have signed’ because it makes the other one look worse.
“And I think there’s a possibility that may have happened… and because I think if two of them sign and then they come out and say ‘oh, we’ve signed them’ it puts so much pressure on the other one, doesn’t it?”
All three remain an integral part of Arne Slot’s first-choice XI despite no concrete update regarding their contract situation. Van Dijk and Salah were even on the score sheet last night as Liverpool dispatched Tottenham to make the Carabao Cup final, where they’ll face Newcastle United.
Salah remains linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League, while Alexander-Arnold is ever subject of interest from Real Madrid, with Los Blancos having even approached Liverpool for his signature in January.
TKT Opinion
Robbie Fowler was a master of his craft back in the day. Not only was he a star footballer, he was a star footballer at Liverpool, so he understands better than most what things might be like for Salah, Van Dijk, and Alexander-Arnold at the moment.
This is one of the more interesting takes on the three players’ never-ending contract saga that we have heard, and it certainly makes one think. From wanting to make a huge social media splash, especially after two drab transfer windows, to pressurising the so-called “third” player into signing the contract, anything could be afoot.
