Liverpool are interested in signing Wolfsburg defender Konstantinos Koulierakis in the summer

Liverpool have been linked with plenty of names after the conclusion of the winter transfer window, suggesting at a significantly busier summer transfer window this time round. To that end, they are currently monitoring some stars of tomorrow in Greek football.

According to a report from German outlet Sport Bild, Liverpool have enquired VfL Wolfsburg over a potential summer deal for defender Konstantinos Koulierakis. They are one of the Greece defender’s biggest admirers at the moment, though other European bigwigs such as Real Madrid and AC Milan are also vying for his signature.

Konstantinos Koulierakis has been starring in the Bundesliga for Wolfsburg this season following his summer move from Greek side PAOK. He has quickly adapted to the demands of Bundesliga football, starting 17 of 19 league games thus far. The youngster is also proving to be a threat in front of the opposition’s goal, netting three times in four Champions League qualifying games earlier this campaign.

The aforementioned report adds the Chania-born defensive starlet would cost in the region of €40m if he were to leave Wolfsburg after just one season. Liverpool have established good contacts with the Bundesliga club ahead of more concrete negotiations when the transfer window reopens.

The Reds may be top of the Premier League and finished the Champions League group phase at the summit, but Arne Slot will be keen to rebuild the squad that he inherited from Jurgen Klopp. Virgil van Dijk has been Liverpool’s rock at the back for years now. He has arguably been the best defender in Europe over the last five to six years. However, the Dutchman has entered the final months of his contract at Anfield.

Van Dijk is yet to make a final decision on his future, and while the club chiefs must persuade him to stay and extend his contract, they also have to plan for the future given our skipper will turn 34 in July. And Koulierakis could be groomed into a long-term potential replacement for Van Dijk if signed.

Interest in Koulierakis shows that the Merseysiders are willing to grow and not resting on their laurels. The 11-cap Greece international would strengthen Arne Slot’s squad—both with immediate impact and for the future.
