Jurgen Klopp calls for patience amidst Liverpool rebuild

Liverpool FC are in desperate need of a rebuild and the fact is not lost on Jurgen Klopp. The German manager has often stayed loyal to his players but even he cannot turn a blind eye to the struggles on Merseyside.

The Reds brought in Darwin Nunez, Calvin Ramsey, Fabio Carvalho and Cody Gakpo over the last two transfer windows. While the quartet strengthens areas up front and at right-back, the midfield remains in neglect.

Jordan Henderson and James Milner are regressing while Fabinho’s form has nosedived off a cliff. Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are injury-prone and there is little that Thiago Alcantara can do on his own. It is fair to say that this imbalance in the team has impacted our performances this season as a whole.

Speaking on the Football People Podcast (h/t The Metro), Klopp has opened up on the job that awaits him at Anfield. The German has enjoyed success at all the clubs he has been at but has never had to rebuild a side for a second time.

Doing so while matching the expectations at Liverpool will be no easy feat but there are few better managers in world football than the 55-year-old. Klopp isn’t just interested in short-term fixes and has his eye on the bigger picture.

“I know the majority of the world is just interested in the short term but we have to be long-term focused as well.”

Unlike clubs that throw money at the problem, Liverpool have adopted measured moves in recent years. Just because the approach has hit a barrier, doesn’t mean we can throw it out of the window and adopt extravagant measures,

“Transition needs time if you don’t have endless money, otherwise you can change overnight pretty much and bring in ten players.”

Liverpool’s approach is in stark contrast to that of Chelsea who continues with their cash-rich approach in the transfer market. They have, if anything, gotten even more brazen at throwing money at a problem following Todd Boehly’s arrival. Clearly, it is not something we can do and Klopp understands that.

Despite Chelsea’s extravagance, they are still in a rut and face a real fight on their hands to secure a top-four finish. The fact that their approach has earned them little to show for their efforts is a proper example of money not being enough to solve all the problems at a football club.

Liverpool are clearly in transition and faces a pivotal summer transfer window, with or without UEFA Champions League football to offer. Either way, Klopp and co cannot afford to get their plans wrong. To wait anymore without doing anything is likely to throw away all the good work done at the club over the past few years.
